What is therapy for?

Life can be challenging and sometimes we can struggle to cope. People attend therapy for many different reasons. At times we can struggle to deal with a certain situation or event, such as bereavement, the ending of a relationship, stress, health difficulties or relationship challenges. Perhaps you are struggling with anxiety, depression, addictions, identity issues, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, or something else is causing you distress?

At times it can be hard to know where to turn, you may find you benefit from having a safe, non-judgemental place to share your difficulties and work through them with someone trained to support you.

How can I help?

I offer a safe and confidential space where you can explore and share your difficulties. I will listen and we can work together to help you find a way through! I work in an integrative way and tailor my approach, focusing on you as an individual, as everyone who comes to therapy is unique.

Self awareness is often the first step which helps you take control of your life, heal from past experiences and ultimately improve your mental wellbeing. I am experienced in supporting clients to improve their self understanding of their patterns, habits and behaviours and working with that knowledge help them find solutions to their problems. My approach can help clients to find ways to cope in the short term whilst also tackling the root cause of their difficulties.

My goal is to support you to make sense of your experience and have ways to move forward with your life in a way that is authentic for you.

Neurodivergent Affirming Therapy

Many neurodivergent individuals experience anxiety and mental health difficulties. This can be a consequence of having to exist in, and navigate a neurotypical world, which can cause trauma, stress and anxiety. Affirmative and specialist therapy can support neurodivergent individuals process their experiences, increase their self awareness, manage their difficulties and empower them to live happier and more fulfilling lives.

What issues can I help with?

Anxiety.JPG

Anxiety

Anxiety can affect our ability to enjoy life, wearing us down physically and mentally it can have a huge impact on our wellbeing. Anxiety is a condition that is very often uncontrollable and persistent. Anxiety impacts us all in different ways and is often associated with feelings of worry, apprehension, panic and dread. Anxiety is triggered by worry of future events, memories of past events or difficulty dealing with day to day issues. During counselling we can explore your experience in a safe environment and help you identify the cause of your worries so you can deal with your emotions in an effective way, reducing the feelings associated with anxiety and stress.

Loneliness

Depression or Low Mood

Low mood or depression can have a huge impact on our ability to cope with everyday life and seek pleasure from the things we used to enjoy. Depression is a common medical illness that negatively impacts how you feel, think and behave. Depression  can lead to a variety of physical and emotional issues and can impact an individual's ability to function at home and at work. I can offer you a place to talk about your feelings and explore the underlying issues. Mindfulness and CBT strategies may be helpful to gain a different perspective and employ coping strategies to manage your mood and live more fully everyday.

Self Harm

People have their own reasons for self-harming but it can be a way of coping with feelings that they find overwhelming. Self-harm is often thought of in terms of cutting, scratching or burning, however, there are other forms of self-harm, such as risk-taking behaviours, excessive working or exercise, destructive relationships, food, alcohol and drug abuse. Therapy can help people understand the issues around their self-harming and enable them to find healthier ways to manage them. We can start to explore the feelings around the self-harm, provide relief for the distress and increase self-awareness of the underlying issues.

Eating Disorders

Disordered eating occurs when you develop an unhealthy relationship with food which can impact your daily life, affecting you physical and mental health. This could include eating too little, too much, purging, becoming obsessed with your weight or body shape, or over exercise. Some people’s behaviour around food can be used to cope with difficult and painful emotions or to take control of their lives. Counselling can provide you time to discuss these emotions in a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space and can help you change unhelpful thoughts and unhealthy behaviours.

Addiction

Addiction occurs when you become overly dependent on something you take, do, or use, and struggle to control this. When your dependence on a substance or behaviour causes you more issues and pain than relief or pleasure, then it is a problem you may want to address. People can be addicted to substances, such as drugs, alcohol or nicotine, or, behaviours, such as gambling, shopping, sex or pornography. For many individuals their addiction is driven by an underlying issue such as trauma or negative life experiences. In therapy you can explore the causes of your addiction to help you stop the addictive behaviour in a safe space, without judgement. Understanding the causes of addiction, and addressing these, is an important part of most people’s recovery.

Abuse and Trauma

Abuse comes in many forms and can occur at any time throughout our lives. Trauma can develop as a result of abuse that has occurred or a life event we have experienced. Having a safe space to process the initial issue can help individuals cope with the abuse or trauma they have experienced.

Grief and Loss

The thoughts and experiences we have when we lose someone or something significant in our lives can be extremely difficult to deal with alone. Loss can also come in many forms and may be the loss of a loved one, relationship, partner, divorce,  loss of job, loss of purpose or identity.

Everyone grieves loss in their own unique way and there is no right or wrong way to grieve. I aim to help you process the difficult emotions, openly and honestly and make sense of your new reality and gradually adjust to your painful loss.
